The South Asian Flagship Languages Initiative (SAFLI) is a special initiative of the Boren Awards for International Study offering awardees the opportunity for intensive language study of Hindi and Urdu and for cultural immersion by participating in domestic and overseas language programs. Participants in SAFLI may start with no language proficiency through advanced proficiency in Hindi. The SAFLI program is administered through UW–Madison. 

SAFLI-Hindi and -Urdu students participate in a full-time domestic summer program offered at UW–Madison through SASLI. SAFLI-Hindi students will then travel abroad to Jaipur, India for a full-time fall semester of language and culture study. SAFLI-Urdu students must select a program for the study of Urdu in India according to the rules for self-designed programs. All participants must complete both the summer domestic and fall abroad programs.
