PEDIAT 646 — CANCER GENETICS RISK ASSESSMENT AND COUNSELING

2 credits.

The purpose of this course is to equip students with the background knowledge needed to provide cancer genetics counseling services. The information gained from the course will be put into practice during the second year cancer rotation, collectively preparing students for clinical practice. Students are provided with a background in cancer genetics from a medical, biological, and clinical perspective. The course includes: general principles and topics in oncology; familial cancers and cancer syndromes; and management, counseling, social, ethical, and legal issues.

PEDIAT 713 — PRACTICUM IN GENETICS COUNSELING

3 credits.

Introductory practicum in genetics counseling, designed to acquaint the student with the basic practice skills required, protocols used, and professional issues in genetics counseling. Clinical experiences in a variety of specialty clinics provide opportunities for initial development of interviewing, data collection, and counseling skills.

PEDIAT 714 — PRACTICUM IN GENETICS COUNSELING

3 credits.

Second semester of the practicum in genetics counseling. Builds upon the first semester course (713) and provides additional opportunities to develop and improve skills in interviewing, data collection, case management and counseling.

PEDIAT/​GENETICS/​MD GENET/​NURSING  731 — ADVANCED CLINICAL GENETICS CONCEPTS

3 credits.

An advanced course covering clinical genetic concepts including phenotype, genetic mechanisms, approach to diagnosis (medical, clinical and genetic testing protocols), and natural history (including management approaches). While specific for Genetic Counselor Studies students other healthcare providers are allowed if they have sufficient genetic background knowledge.

PEDIAT 737 — CONTEMPORARY PROFESSIONAL ISSUES IN GENETICS COUNSELING

1 credit.

A series of selected basic issues and topics that are core curricular requirements specific to genetics counseling. Relevant, non-redundant topics will be scheduled over four consecutive semesters.

PEDIAT 739 — LITERATURE SEARCH STRATEGIES AND ANALYSIS IN CLINICAL GENETICS

2 credits.

Approaches to literature searching including computerized databases and information retrieval are covered. Methods are provided for the students to learn to read clinical literature critically, to recognize and assess biases and to understand the limits of currently available clinical genetics studies.

PEDIAT 741 — INTERVIEWING AND COUNSELING FOR THE GENETIC COUNSELING I

1 credit.

This is the basic counseling and interviewing practice course for the Genetic Counselor Training Program. Course activities include role play, standardized patients, research/opinion paper, readings, and discussion.

PEDIAT 742 — CLINICAL EMBRYOLOGY AND PRENATAL GENETICS

1 credit.

Review human development (normal and abnormal) and the influence of genetic disorders and teratogens, common indications for prenatal genetic counseling as well as available prenatal diagnosis and screening techniques. This course prepares the genetic counseling student for the prenatal clinical practicum.

PEDIAT 744 — APPLICATIONS OF BIOCHEMICAL GENETICS FOR GENETIC COUNSELORS

2 credits.

This course will introduce to the genetics counseling trainee applications of biochemical and molecular diagnostic tests in clinical practice and will review the major classes of inborn errors of metabolism.

PEDIAT 745 — SEMINAR IN MEDICAL GENETIC COUNSELING RESEARCH

1 credit.

Course includes invited speakers and journal club participation. Speakers are campus investigators whose research is relevant to medical genetics and genetic counseling. Participation in the Clinical Genetics Center journal club is required.

Interdisciplinary team care of children with special health care needs across the trajectory of illness presented within the context of family, culture, social determinants of health, community, and healthcare policy. Students introduced to interdisciplinary, collaborative, family-centered team care.

PEDIAT 813 — ADVANCED PRACTICUM IN GENETICS COUNSELING

A two semester program of clinical experiences which explores some of the pertinent professional issues in genetics counseling. The clinical experiences consist of four eight-week rotations which provide many opportunities for trainees to work toward perfecting skills in counseling, interviewing, data collection, case coordination and ongoing follow-along of genetics families.

PEDIAT 814 — ADVANCED PRACTICUM IN GENETICS COUNSELING

4-5 credits.

The second of a two semester sequence of clinical experiences and didactics which provides opportunities for trainees to obtain professional competency in counseling, interviewing, and case coordination; to explore professional boundaries and limits; and learn strategies to develop a self-reflective practice.

PEDIAT 920 — PEDIATRIC INPATIENT ELECTIVE

The Pediatric Inpatient Elective is an inpatient clinical experience where students will have primary responsibility for patients, performing similarly to an acting intern. This experience does not replace an acting internship, and is meant as a secondary opportunity for students to expand their clinical experiences and knowledge base. Students participating in this course will perform clinical responsibilities including: (1) Demonstrate a comprehensive approach to the care of acutely ill inpatients beginning with admission to the hospital and culminating with the successful transfer of the patient to next level of care. (2) Function with the level of supervision provided to a new intern. (3) Take ownership for assigned patients and thus be identified as the primary inpatient provider by team and family.

PEDIAT 938 — ACTING INPATIENT INTERNSHIP - PEDIATRICS

4 credits.

As an inpatient pediatric acting intern (AI), you will have primary responsibility for pediatric inpatients, actionable in four domains: 1. Management: As an AI, you will develop actionable management and treatment plans based on your history, physical exam and targeted data. 2. Communications: AIs will communicate with colleagues, primary care providers and consultants. AIs will demonstrate thorough patient hand-offs and communicate concise transfer and/or discharge summaries that will be integral to patient care. 3. Learning: Patient care issues will be the central guide for learning, directing reading, consultation and research. AIs will formulate questions based upon clinical dilemmas, research the appropriate literature and databases to find the answers, and apply findings to the care of individual patients. 4. Organization: As the primary inpatient provider for patients, AIs will develop efficiency in accomplishing the day to day tasks necessary for the coordination and management of patient care.

Two and four week rotations are available.

PEDIAT 968 — COMMUNITY PEDIATRICS & ADVOCACY EXPERIENCE

2-4 credits.

Medical students will learn about the aspects of the health care of children which lie outside of the traditional hospital/clinic systems. Gaining a strong appreciation of the social determinants of health, public health measures, and systems-based approaches is a key aspect of this elective. An advocacy project will be formulated and completed as part of this rotation.

PEDIAT 970 — PEDIATRIC RHEUMATOLOGY

2-4 credits.

Students will see patients in outpatient clinics, round with inpatient attendings, five times a week, attend pediatric rheumatology conferences, attend weekly pediatric grand rounds, observe procedures and attend one-on-one tutorials.

PEDIAT 973 — PEDIATRIC GASTROENTEROLOGY

2-4 credits.

Students will participate in pediatric gastroenterology outpatient clinics, round with inpatient faculty, attend pediatric gastroenterology conferences, attend daily pediatric conferences including morning report, case conferences, and grand rounds. Students will also be able to observe procedures in the operating room. Students will be responsible for a 20 minute case-based presentation at the end of the rotation.
